Five houseplants for a stylish Urban Jungle interior

Do you get your daily dose of inspiration from interiors filled with green and cozy houseplants? Then you’re not alone. We too, are crazy about this Urban Jungle trend! To prevent you from - literally - getting lost in the woods, we have put together a list of our all-time favourite plants. This way, you can select your favourite plants at a glance and give your interior that stylish, green boost!

Ficus Lyrata
Ficus Lyrata - native to the West-African tropical rainforests - is also known as Fiddle-leaf Fig because of the way its leaves are shaped. It is a houseplant with pretty, large leaves; which start out narrow and end in a broad apex, and can grow up to half a metre long.

This Fiddle-leaf Fig is pretty easy to take care of and doesn’t need a lot of water. Make sure that the soil is evenly moist - and the rest will take care of itself. Don’t give it too much moisture all at once, but water it in small amounts.

Ficus Lyrata thrives in sunlight. Position it in a bright place, but try and avoid - if possible - the harsh afternoon sun.

Alocasia - also known as Elephant Ear - is a true eye-catcher for your interior. Because of its beautiful, distinctive leaves it can instantly give your interior a touch of wilderness. What else can you expect, with its roots in the tropical rain forests of Southeast Asia?

Alocasia is used to a lot of water - make sure its soil always remains slightly moist. Watering it once a week should be enough. If you don’t want to hold back your green fingers; spraying it once a week with some water will do wonders!

Make sure this tropical plant gets a lot of light, but isn’t permanently placed in direct sunlight. Pay attention not to position it near a heating source - or above it - as Alocasia enjoys humidity.

Pancake Plant / Pilea Peperomiodes
Yesss.. we love Pilea Peperomiodes, aka the Pancake Plant. Who doesn’t recognise it? This cute little plant with its leaves in the shape of pancakes - aha, hence the name - would look good in any interior and even helps to purify the air in the room.

Fortunately, this little plant is not very demanding as far as maintenance is concerned - and therefore easy to take care of. Water it once or twice a week and that’s all you need to do. Best thing is to keep the soil moist at all times.

Make sure it gets enough light, but avoid - if possible - too much direct sunlight. This might burn the leaves. The ideal position for this fun houseplant is a partially shaded location.

Extra tip
Young offspring will often sprout at the base of the Pancake Plant, Should such a sprig grow up to a reasonable size, you can carefully pull it out of the soil. Put the seedling in a shallow glass of water to make it grow some extra roots and plant it afterwards in a new pot with fresh soil. This way, you’ll have another Pancake Plant in no time!

Swiss Cheese Plant / Monstera Deliciosa
Those of you who would like to magically turn their living room into an Urban Jungle, could surely make good use of the Swiss Cheese Plant - aka Monstera Deliciosa. This invincible climber with its large leaves is a true Instagram model and can be found in many modern interiors.

This plant from Middle and South America does not need a lot of care. Just watering it regularly will ensure years of joy.

This plant will do well in both light or dark places. The more light, the faster it will grow. Direct sunlight is not good for the Swiss Cheese plant.

Extra tip
The Swiss Cheese plant, too, is easily multiplied by raising plants from cuttings. This way, you end up with several plants to decorate your house with. The only thing you need to do is to cut off a leaf with its stem - and to stick that into a pot with moist soil.

anana plant
The fifth plant that has become indispensable to current interior design is Musa, aka the Banana plant. With its large, green leaves, it will decorate any room.

As the Banana plant consists of 80% water, you won’t be surprised to hear it needs a lot of water. Rule number one: the soil should never dry out. This is why it is recommended to water the plant - especially in summer - several times per week.

Sun. Banana plant loves it! Position it near a window where there is a lot of light - but keep away from direct sunlight in order to protect the pretty leaves from sunburn.

Should you have no green fingers at all - or if you prefer a different kind of houseplant in your home; that is possible, too. With Banana Leaf IXXI you can create just as cool an Urban Jungle in your living space!
