5 tips for the perfect finishing touch for your photos

This summer, we are taking you through the world of the perfect photo. We will provide tips and examples for taking and processing your beautiful photo(s) and inspire you with great DIY ideas for turning your stunning photos into real eye-catchers. Have you read the last two editions? Then you're ready for the next step: use these five tips to edit your photos with your smartphone.

Tip 1 : Correcting the horizon

Let's start with the  basics. Without realising, we often take photographs on a slant. Particularly if you’re taking them on the move. It’s not usually a disaster but if an object in the photo should be upright, it’s better to correct the photo. The editing functions on an iPhone allow you to straighten a photo with a simple click using the crop pictogram. Of course, you can also find this function in other editing apps.

Tip 2 : Optimise your photo

The magic wand. Not familiar with it? It could well become your best friend. For really quick and easy editing, choose this function. Click on 'edit’ on the relevant photo and the magic wand will appear top right. One click and your photo is magically optimised and ready to go! PS. This function is only available to iPhone users.

Tip 3 : Use filters

Perhaps the sun wasn't shining when you took a lovely photo and it is lacking a bit of warmth? Don’t panic. You can always apply a filter later. With a filter, you can quickly and easily create a tropical paradise feeling in a photo. Don't go overboard with the filter; they can usually be applied gradually in most editing apps. Make sure that the filter is not overwhelming and the photo remains natural looking. You don't want to be known as the one with the Photoshop fail! ;-)

IXXI’s favourite: for iPhone owners; a perfect filter for adding a little character to your photo is the dramatic filter. It also offers a warm variant so you can bring back the missing sun.

Tip 4 : Play with contrast and brightness

Contrast and brightness are great friends. Your photos often say much more when you make them a little brighter, even if this means compromising on colour and contours. The solution: turn the contrast up! The settings on your smartphone will give you a great result. If not, there are plenty of other good apps that will help you edit your photos. You can find our favourite editing apps in the top 5 at the bottom of this article!

Tip 5 : Choose a theme

Finally, it is a good idea to create an overview or a series. If you want to collect your photos in an online album or print them, it’s nice to pick the photos with the same colour tones or ‘look’. It doesn’t matter if the photos are different colours. If you apply one filter, the photos will all look similar. This will create unity and a series of photos that all complement one another. If you’d like a little variety, you can choose to make a few black/white.
